Questions to ask your dentist about sedation for your child.
Parents and guardians should ask the following questions concerning in-office sedation for their children provided by a dentist in a dental office. Furthermore, SD4K recommends talking to Dr Ciz about any concerns you might have about the treatment plan prior, during and after the procedure:
PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE
A sedation team member will call you to get this information and it will be reviewed by Dr Ciz several days before the consultation to insure your child is a candidate for sedation. This information will again be reviewed on the day of the procedure when your child is examined by the sedation team and Dr Ciz.
You will be given eating and drinking instructions by our sedation team. Your child must not have any solid foods from midnight the night before the procedure.
Most children do not require sedative medications before coming to the office. In the event that a sedative is required, you will be given specific instructions.
Your child will be administered sedation for dentistry by Dr Ciz, a specialist in dental anaesthesia since 2005, who has treated tens of thousands of children with this or higher levels of sedation and general anaesthesia. This is the highest standard of care available in Ontario.
The sedation team has training in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Emergency drills are performed on a regular basis.
The RCDSO has two types of facility permits. Type A permits are required when all emergency medications and equipment remain on site. Type B permits are required when a travelling sedation provider visits the office at scheduled times. Since Dr Ciz works in one office with one sedation team, SD4K has a Type A facility permit. As a dentist anaesthesiologist, Dr Ciz is licensed to provide the highest level of sedation and anaesthesia.

DURING THE PROCEDURE
Your child will receive only enough medication for deep sedation / light general anaesthesia in which your child will be unconscious but still breathing on their own ( no breathing tube ) with normal blood pressure and vital signs.
SD4K monitors all physiologic variables according to RCDSO guidelines. These are the same standards as operating rooms and surgical centres. All emergency medications and equipment are immediately available and remain onsite as per Type A facility permits.
